Surgical Mindfulness
How to use this program:
Session 1
Session 1 can be completed as soon as you know that you will be having surgery.
The goal of the video in this session is to explain the science of pain and why the body creates it. This will build a foundation for you to then learn about how the practice of mindfulness can play a large role in the successful management of your pain.
Session 2
Session 2 can be completed after you finish and feel comfortable with session 1.
The goal of this exercise is to address your thoughts about surgery and the recovery process, putting them into perspective whether they are positive, negative, or neutral.
Session 3
Session 3 can be completed after finishing sessions 1 and 2.
The goal of this exercise is to continue building on what you have learned in sessions 1 and 2, listening to your body and beginning to sense and understand any pain you are experiencing.
Session 4
Session 4 should be completed as you get closer to your surgery. This could be done as many times as you would like in the days leading up to your surgery, even on the morning of.
The goal of this exercise is the same as in section 2, to address and help you put into perspective any thoughts you might be having about your surgery and the recovery process. During this exercise we will specifically address any worries you might have about the discomfort you will experience after the operation.
Session 5
Session 5 should be completed after you have settled into your home or wherever you will be recovering. It should be repeated as many times as you find helpful.
The goal of this exercise is to take the knowledge and tools we have learned in the previous sessions and use them to manage your ongoing relationship with pain.
